Ophthalmic opticians in Edinburgh

Our fully qualified ophthalmic opticians and support staff provide a complete range of optical services, from an initial eye examination to check your prescription and eye health through to the provision of contact lenses or spectacles with designer frames.

The highly experienced optometrists at Browns Opticians utilise the latest state-of-the-art equipment to care for your vision, including retinal camera imaging during your eye test. Eye examinations are free for all customers and we screen for glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease.

Macular degeneration assessment

We are currently one of only two opticians in Scotland who are licensed to carry out a Sightrisk assessment for macular degeneration. This assessment calculates the chance of developing this sight threatening condition and allows us to advise you of the actions which can be taken to reduce this risk.

Alongside the assessment itself, as official stockists we are also able to provide you with MacuShield, which is a supplement taken for macular degeneration that helps promote and support eye health.

Nocturnal contact lenses

Have you considered laser surgery but are concerned about the risks? Browns Opticians are currently one of only two opticians in Edinburgh to fit special nocturnal contact lenses.

If suitable for your eyes, these are worn overnight and removed during the day. The lenses are precision engineered to gently correct your vision as you sleep, so there is no need to wear contact lenses or glasses during the day.
